1985年的春天，莱昂纳尔在完成《We Are the World》之后，又应邀为电影《飞越苏联》谱写一首同名的主题曲。影片讲述了一个苏联叛变者逃到了西方，而一个美国叛变者因理想的破灭又逃到了苏联的故事。
